World Tourism Day 2020
The theme for this year is Tourism & Rural Development, which is a topic close to our hearts here at USAID SCHEP. From the United Nations World Tourism Organization: “’Tourism and Rural Development’ celebrates the sector’s unique ability to drive economic development and provide opportunities outside of big cities, including in those communities that would otherwise be left behind. World Tourism Day 2020 also highlights the important role tourism plays in preserving and promoting culture and heritage all around the world.”
Community-led cultural tourism is a pillar of SCHEP’s approach to supporting the sustainable management of Jordan’s cultural heritage sites and the economic empowerment of communities living near them. Over the past several years, we have helped to establish and develop four tourism-oriented enterprises throughout the country. This week we will introduce you to each one, and share some details about how these companies have dealt with the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on the tourism sector.
